Uni Food

There are a lot of misconceptions when it comes to uni, and one of the greatest misconceptions is that of food. If I delved into all the misconceptions of uni, I would be here for a while and so I shall address other areas of this in another blog.

I thought for those who don't go to uni or are planning to go to uni, or in fact are already at uni, I would give you the misconceptions that seem to be apparent in my uni experience- not to say they aren't true for other students...

♥ Takeaways are not on the menu every night.
I know for some students, takeaways form the basis of every meal, and every after drinking snack (I have toast when I get home from a night out) but for me this is not possible; not that I don't wish I could skip cooking for a quick takeaway. I don't think I could afford a regular takeaway let alone having it for dinner more times than I cooked. Unless you're a rich kid, this misconception is just not feasible and I'm mighty glad too because otherwise the pounds would've surely piled on over the last 2 and a half years.

♥ Good chocolate and biscuits are like finding a gold mine.
I'm grateful that my Mum stocks me up on good chocolate whenever I go home and I try and make it last to great avail. I once got given a free Galaxy chocolate bar and made it last a week- yes, a normal size chocolate bar... When you need that pick me up, you got to have the willpower to resist the chocolate appeal on every other day. You might think that good chocolate and biscuits don't cost a lot, but when you add it to your normal food bill- they are something that can be put back when you hear the flies buzzing around in your empty purse.

♥ Pasta is your best friend.
This is not a misconception, and in fact for me, it's probably a misconception in the fact it's understated. When I'm at uni, I'm practically a vegetarian, no joke. I live off cheesy pasta, pasta bake, soup or cheese on toast. It's ridiculous to think about how expensive meat is and the fact that you technically don't even need it in your diet. The staples in my food basket are bread, soup, pasta, pasta sauce, cheese, fruit and veg- carbohydrate hell. It's become an art skill that I can make £10 last me a week, and sometimes even longer.

♥ Cooking is a bitch.
I hate it and I really don't care for it that much to be bothered hence my limited cooking i.e. pasta!

♥ You eat everything and anything you can at home home (where your parents are)
When you are faced with a fridge full of food that you don't have to replace, you go to town. I'm not the only student that gets excited by the prospect of going home to gorge themselves on free food. It's the time that you can indulge in all the ways that you have not in uni. My willpower has become ridiculously strong since being at uni- I am quite proud of that!

If you're a foodie, and you don't have much money- uni will probably suck for you. But for me, I'm not that fussed about food and know that as long as it keeps me going, it's good for me. Money is scarce and food is sacred, you can't be picky when you go to uni and that takeaway that you long to have tastes so much better when you can get your hands on it. It's the little things like a portion of chips that make uni food exciting after days/weeks of boring food.. Sad, I know.
